BACK TO THE BASICS - TRADITIONAL KNOWLEDGE IN THE MODERN AGE 2ND NOVEMBER 2013
The Ummah of the Beloved Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) has been identified in the Qur’an as Khayrul Umam’ (the best of communities). This is indeed because we have been sent the ‘la crème de la crème’ of the Messengers (peace be upon them all). The implication of this is that the Ummah of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) will undergo some of the greatest tribulations to test that greatness. We have indeed been faced with many calamities in our recent history. The most recent, and most deadly yet, being the propaganda of the anti-Taqleed lobby which aims to disrupt a specific set of teachings which date back at least 1200 years.
To combat this monstrous propaganda, the Islamic Lifestyle Solutions of Durban (Founded by Shaykh Faheem and Moulana Saleh Joosab Arbee) hosted a conference on the 2nd November 2013 at the NMJ Islamic Centre entitled, ‘Back to the Basics – Traditional Knowledge in the Modern Age’. The theme of the conference was titled, ‘The Four Imaams – A Forgotten Legacy’. The conference commenced at 2pm, and by the Grace of Allah Ta Aala, within 10mins of commencement, the 1200 available seats were almost fully occupied. A total number of 1450 people attended this first of a kind conference.
This endeavor was aimed at educating the masses in Durban of the importance, strategic significance, and the immense virtue of the Imaams of Islamic Jurisprudence (Hanafi, Shaafa’I, Maaliki, Humbali) in the modern age. This was achieved by a galaxy of Ulama / Shuyookh hailing from various parts of South Africa to consolidate their efforts towards this noble cause. Approximately 30 Ulama attended this gathering. The panel of speakers outside of Durban included, Shaykh Ebrahiem Moos (Cape Town), Shaykh Arshad Azhari (Pretoria), Shaykh Fakhruddin Owaisi Al-Madani. The rest of the panel was made up of scholars from Durban, viz. Mufti Goolam Soofie, Mufti Farouk Soofie, Mufti Ebrahim Soofie and Hafez Fuzayl Soofie.
The chosen subjects were indeed well thought out, and equally well presented by the Ulama. Some of the topics included, ‘Ilm & Fiqh in the Prophetic Era’ , ‘Importance of Taqleed’ , ‘Juristic Analogy in the Hanafi Mazh-hub’, ‘Imaam Ahmad bin Hambal – Methodological Reflections ‘, ‘Conditions of a Mujtahid’, ‘Talfeeq’, ‘Aqeedah of the Four Imaams’, etc.
Another unique aspect of the conference was a book launch synchronized to the theme of the conference. The book was published by the Islamic Lifestyle Solutions and was titled, ‘The Four Imaams – A Forgotten Legacy’. This book is a one of a kind book to be launched as every chapter of the book was authored by a different scholar / organization. The thought process behind this was to alleviate the common misconception that the Ulama of the Ahlus Sunnah Wal Jama’ah are not unified. The combined effort of the Ulama for this conference and this book is indicative of the strength and unity within the new generation of the Ulama of the Ahlus Sunnah.
The Islamic Lifestyle Solutions has promised to host this conference on an annual basis but the theme will be altered every year to tackle contemporary issues faced by the Ummah in this most deceptive age.
